In the year of 2016, penguins have several adaptations to help them survive in Antarctica. For example, they have a lot of blubber to keep them warm in the water, and on land. Right now, they are mainly land animals, and they mainly live on icebergs. Now, we are experiencing issues with global warming worldwide. This could cause a major problem with the population of penguins, hence they live on icebergs. Unless they are able to adapt to their changing environment, they could become extinct quickly, especially since Antarctica's temperatures are increasing twice as fast as the rest of the world.
Current Adaptations:
Possible Future Adaptations:
Current Adaptations:
- rounder, larger bodies to stay warm
- can hold their breath for long amounts of time underwater
- webbed feet to swim faster
- solid bones to help them stay underwater
- thick skin to stay warm
- flippers to make turns underwater
- dark feathers to absorb heat from the sun
- tightly packed, waterproof feathers to protect their skin underwater
Possible Future Adaptations:
- become marine animals instead of land animals
- larger flippers to make sharper and faster turns to avoid predators underwater
- webbed feet become fins/ flippers
- gills to breath underwater
- larger beak to catch fish quicker and fend of predators
- slimmer body to lose heat quicker because of the increasing temperatures
