The animal our group has chosen for our adaptations project is the polar bear, or ursus maritimus. We predict the ice that the polar bears hunt on will recede farther from the shore due to global warming, leaving polar bears without a food source, causing them to change to a more woodland environment (separation). We predict our animal will have darker fur so they can blend in, longer, more slender claws, no fur on the bottom of its feet, less fat, and lighter skin due to warmer temperatures (adaptation). Lastly, the newly adapted polar bear will become a new species, able to reproduce with other adapted polar bears(division). Our new species is called Ursus magnus, or the Great Bear.
